71 New Parasitoid Wasp Species Discovered in Southeast Asia

Scientists have discovered 71 new species of parasitoid wasp species in Southeast Asia. The wasps are all from the genus Oxyscelio. The wasps were found in countries including Brunei, China, Christmas Island, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, The Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Oxyscelio greenacus, one of 71 new species, is pictured above.
The scientists say these wasps sterilize or kill the host, and sometimes consume it. The wasps in the genus are known to parasitize on the eggs of other insects.
The research was published here in the journal ZooKeys.
