Irene Makes Landfall in New York City as a Tropical Storm

Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm before making landfall in New York City. Tropical Storm Irene moved over New York City around 9:00 AM EDT according to the National Hurricane Center.
The winds of Irene were reduced to 65 mph. Irene was a hurricane when it made an earlier landfall this morning near Little Egg Inlet in New Jersey.REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT AND NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATE THAT THE CENTER OF IRENE MOVED OVER NEW YORK CITY AROUND 900 AM EDT...1300 UTC. IRENE HAS WEAKENED TO A TROPICAL STORM AND THE ESTIMATED INTENSITY AT LANDFALL WAS 65 MPH...100 KM/H.
The pressure, which has risen to 965 mb, also indicates Irene has been weaking. Tropical Storm Irene is still expected to cause widespread power outages and inland flooding in New England.
