Nearly Continuous Ashfall Damages Forests Near Chile's Puyehue Cordon Caulle Volcanic Complex

Posted on February 4, 2012

This photograph from NASA's Earth Observatory shows an ash plume coming from a vent in Chile's Puyehue Cordon Caulle Volcanic Complex (PCCVC). The volcano has been releasing ash nearly continuously for eight months. This has covered the landscape around the volcano with ash. This ash is damaging the evergreen forests on the east side of the volcano. The forest on the west side have not received as much as and still appear green. The Earth Observatory says Chile called an agricultural emergency for the Los Rios region. The ash has also been distrupting air travel in the region.
