New Species of Owlet Moth Discovered in Iran

A new species of owlet moth (family Noctuidae) has been discovered in Iran. It is the fifth described species of the genus Anagnorisma. The new species, Anagnorisma chamrani, has a wingspan of 34 to 35 millimeters. A female A. chamrani is pictured above and a male is pictured below.
The moth was discovered during an expedition at high altitude above 2,500 meters in north-eastern Iran on a cold night in late summer 2012. The specimens had been attracted to an ultraviolet light trap on the Binaloud Mountain near Mashhad city, the capital of the Khorasan-e-Razavi province of Iran.
The new moth species is named in honor of Dr. Mostafa Chamran (1932-1981), an Iranian scientist and defense minister. A report on the new moth species was published here in ZooKeys.
