NOAA Animation Shows Saharan Dust Cloud Traveling Across Atlantic

This animation was created using an enhanced version of the NOAA NGAC aerosol model. It shows a Saharan dust cloud traveling across the Atlantic. This particular plume of dust was detected late last month moving off the coast of Africa. NOAA says the Saharan Air Layer plays an important role in lessening cyclogenesis, the formation of hurricanes. NASA has two drones on a mission this summer to determine the extent to which Saharan dust can limit the development of tropical cyclones. Take a look:
