Two New Species of Bamboo Worms Identified

Scientists have identified two new species of bamboo worms and a new bamboo worm genus. The worms belong to the bristle worms family (Polychaeta). They have elongated segments that end with an appendage. They are named for their resemblance to slender bamboo shoots.
The new species were identified by PhD student Wang Yueyun and Dr Li Xinzheng from the Marine Biological Museum, Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The researchers identified two new species and a new genus after re-examining specimens collected from South China Sea between 1959 to 1962.
The new species are named Paramaldane glandicincta and Maldane adunca. Paramaldane is the new genus. Both new species are only found in mud sediment of offshore waters of Hainan Island.
A research species on the bamboo worms was published here in the journal, ZooKeys.
