DARPA's Cheetah Robots Hit 28.3 Mph, Now Faster Than Usain Bolt's Peak Speed

Posted on September 6, 2012

DARPA's Cheetah robot continues to get faster. The robot is already the fastest legged robot in history. It beat its previous record of 18 mph with a 28.3 mph sprint on the treadmill.

This is faster than sprinter Usain Bolt's record 27.78 mph 20-meter split during his record 2009 100-meter sprint. Bolt's record data is according to the International Association of Athletics Federations. Here is the Cheetah robot reaching 28.3 mph:

Unlike Usain Bolt, the Cheetah robot is still confined to a treadmill. However, DARPA and Boston Dynamics plan to test a prototype on natural terrain in 2013.
