Giant Crack Opens Up in Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains

A giant crack has opened up in the Earth in Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains. The crack is 750 yards long and 50 yards wide according to the local SNS Outfitters and Guides.

SNS Outfitters and Guides first posted about the crack on its Facebook page where they are calling it "The Gash." A blog post by Ryan McSparran says the guides say they first noticed the giant fissure in early October. They used a rangefinder to get the 750 yards by 50 yards wide estimate. They say there has been no seismic activity in the area.

The disturbing looking sudden hole in the Earth has viraled around the Internet. An article in the Casper Star-Tibune quotes Wyoming Geological Survey Manager of Groundwater and Geologic Hazards and Mapping Seth Wittke as saying the crack is not a danger and was probably caused by a landslide.

Wittke says, "It's a really unique thing to see or talk about, but it's not necessarily a priority because it's not a danger to anyone or anything."
