Smithsonian Channel Builds Life-Size Replica for Titanoboa: Monster Snake Documentary

Posted on March 23, 2012

The National Museum of Natural History will feature a life-size replica of Titanoboa, the 2,500-pound, 48-foot-long prehistoric snake that was a fearsome predator during the Paleocene epoch (over 60 million years ago). The replica is based on a fossil of the snake found in an open-pit coal mine at Cerrejon in La Guajira, Colombia. The school bus sized snake replica will be on exhibit from March 30 until Jan 6, 2013.

Smithsonian Channel also installed a Titanoboa replica at Grand Central Station in New York City to promote its upcoming documentary. LiveScience has photos here.

The two-hour Smithsonian Channel documentary, Titanoboa: Monster Snake, airs Sunday, April 1, at 8 p.m. Here is a teaser for the documentary:

Smithsonian Channel also created videos to show Titanoboa battling T-Rex and another video that answers the question, "Could Titanoboa swallow a motorcycle?" Take a look:
