New Views of Andromeda Galaxy from Herschel Space Observatory

These great news images of the Andromeda spiral galaxy come from the Herschel space observatory. NASA says in the release that Andromeda is estimated to be home to as many as one trillion stars. Andromeda is located 2.3 million light-years from away.

Herschel can detect far-infrared light from cool dust mixed in with the clouds of gas where stars originate. The above image was created using data from Herschel's Photodetecting Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) and spectral and photometric imaging receiver (SPIRE).
