Andean Condor Chick Stretches Out Her Wings

Posted on March 25, 2012

This Andean Condor chick at Taronga is starting to shed her fluffy down coat. Konira's adult feathers are growing in, but she will still have her fluffy down for a few more months. When Korina is an adult she will weigh up to 33 pounds and have a wingspan up to 10.5 feet. National Geographic says the large birds are endangered and difficult to repopulate because they only produce a single offspring every other and year and they have to care for their young for an entire year.
