First Case of Community Spread of Coronavirus in Los Angeles

Los Angeles County health officials are reporting what appears to be the first case of community spread of the novel coronavirus. The county reported two new cases today. One of the patients recently traveled to Japan but the transmission history is not known for the other patient.CBSN Los Angeles reports that there are now 16 cases in Los Angeles County. Dr. Barbara Ferrer, head of the county Department of Public Health, says contacts of the patients will be quarantined.
Patch quotes Ferrer as saying, "The two cases are now in isolation and all of their close contacts are or will be quarantined for up to 14 days from their last date of exposure." She is also encouraging people who are pregnant, elderly and have underlying health conditions to engage in social distancing.
The unknown exposure for this patient means there are likely more coronavirus cases in L.A. county. Hospitals should be checked to make sure no coronavirus cases have been overlooked, especially cases involving pneumonia.
