First Ever Video Footage of Unstudied West African Seahorse Released

Scientists from the University of British Columbia's Project Seahorse have released the first-ever footage of a little-known seahorse species, Hippocampus algiricus, commonly known as the West African seahorse. A fact page about the seahorse can be found here (PDF). The footage of the brightly colored seahorse was captured off the coast of Senegal. The footage was taken by Kate West, a graduate student at Imperial College London and a researcher with Project Seahorse. The seahorse was captured by fisherman and then released, after West convinced them to do so.
West said in a statement, "The fishers caught two animals, and one of them I didn't recognize at first. After examining them, I convinced the fishers to release the seahorses back into the wild - normally they would be sold."
