Future Cargo Ships May Use Giant Retractable Sails, Over 160 Feet High, to Conserve Energy

Researchers at the University of Tokyo are developing a new cargo ship that will save energy by using numerous massive sails. The ship, called the UT Wind Challenger, uses huge retractable sales that are over 160 feet tall and 65 feet wide to maximize wind energy.

The researchers say the ships can reduce fuel consumption by 30% on average. They also say the ships can travel at faster speeds. Take a look:
