It's Fall Foliage Time

Posted on October 19, 2007

Those of you interested in traveling to see the leaves change for Fall can monitor the progress of Fall Foliage on the Weather Channel's Fall Foliage map. The map below shows the change in foliage for today, October 19th. Things are just starting to peak in the Northeast and beginning to change in the Mid-Atlantic.

The USDA Forest Service has a helpful page that explains why leaves change color. The article explains that there re are three types of pigments involved: chlorophyll, carotenoids and anthocyanins.

There are also some great guides to fall foliage on the Internet including the Appalachian Mountain Club's foliage guide and Yankee Foliage. Here is a Fodor's Travel video about the best places to see fall foliage in the United States.
