Two Large Oarfish Spotted in Shallow Waters in Sea of Cortez

Posted on April 8, 2014

Shedd Aquarium recorded some great footage of two oarfish swimming in shallow waters in the Sea of Cortez. Smithsonian says the two oarfish in this video are about 15 feet long.

Oarfish can reach over three times that length according to the Smithsonian. Oarfish are generally found in much deeper waters and are rarely spotted along the shore. The fact that the oarfish are in such shallow water could mean they are very ill. One of the oarfish swims underneath a canoe after being helped back away from the shore by a person using a paddle.
