Unprinter: Researchers Develop Technology That Removes Ink From Paper With Lasers

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have found a way to remove ink from paper using lasers. The researchers say toner-print can be removed from paper without damaging the paper. The ink is vaporized into a gas, which can be captured by filters. The paper can be reused.

Dr Julian M. Allwood says, "What we need to do now is find someone to build a prototype. Thanks to low-energy laser scanners and laser-jet printers, the feasibility for reusing paper in the office is there."

The Telegraph reports that a prototype of the device would currently cost 19,000 pounds ($30,000 U.S.) to build, but a commercial version would be much cheaper.
