Video: Astronaut Chris Hadfield Brushes His Teeth in Space

Posted on April 2, 2013

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield demonstrates how astronauts brush their teeth in space aboard the International Space Station. A standard toothbrush and standard toothpaste are used, but there is no running water. A ball of water is obtained from a water bag to wet the toothbrush. Hadfield swallows the toothpaste after brushing. Spitting out the toothpaste would be a bad idea in a weightless environment. Take a look:

Hadfield is currently living in space aboard the ISS as Commander of Expedition 35. The Canadian Space Agency has more information about personal hygiene in space here.
