Weather History: Indianola, Texas Was Wiped Out by Hurricane in 1886, Remains Underwater Ghost Town

Many today have never even heard of Indianola, Texas. The bustling coastal town of 5,000 people was obliterated by a hurricane in 1886. The hurricane remains one of the top ten most powerful hurricanes to hit the United States with a minimum pressure of 925 mb and maximum sustained winds of 150 mph. The Wikipedia entry says the hurricane made landfall as a strong category four. Today, most of the remnants of the old town of Indianola remain buried under 15 feet of water in the Matagorda Bay. The loss of Indianola led to the development of Galveston as a major Texas port, which was then destroyed in the 1900 Galveston hurricane. Take a look:
