IBM to Build Exascale Computer System for Square Kilometer Array

ASTRON, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy and IBM have announced plans to build an exascale computer system for the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA). The SKA is an is an international project to build the world's largest and most sensitive radio telescope. Upon completion in 2024, the telescope will be used to explore evolving galaxies, dark matter and the origins of the universe.

Scientists estimate that the processing power required to operate the telescope will be equal to several millions of today's fastest computers. The SKA will gather about one exabyte (one quintillion bytes) of astronomical data per day, which is twice the amount of traffic currently handled by the Internet each day. Take a look:
