Black-Eyed Squid Battles Owlfish in MBARI Video

A clawed black-eyed squid (Gonatus onyx) battles an owlfish (Pseudobathylagus miller) in this video from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). The video was captured with Doc Ricketts, MBARI's next generation remote operating vehicle (ROV). LiveScience reports that the underwater battle took place at a depth of 450 meters (1476 feet) and lasted for about an hour.

The video is narrated by MBARI scientist Bruce Robison. He says the squid is trying to carve its sharp beak through the muscles surrounding the owlfish's backbone. Take a look:
