Okeanos Explorer Encounters Dumbo Octopus in the Gulf of Mexico

Posted on May 12, 2014

The Okeanos Explorer captured this incredible footage of a Dumbo Octopus last month in the Gulf of Mexico using its remotely operated vehicle Deep Discoverer. The octopus was found hovering above the surface of the rock ledge.

The Grimpoteuthis has ear-like fins that make it resemble the Disney character. The dumbo octopus was even seen with its legs coiled. The researchers say the Grimpoteuthis has never been observed in this posture before. Take a look:

Dumbo octopuses are a rare site as they are known for living in the benthic zone at the bottom of the sea floor. The Okeanos Explorer also recently captured video of a rare Rhinochimera.
