Giant Wasp Nest Over 21 Feet Long Found in Abandoned House

Posted on April 12, 2013

ThinkSpain reports that police in San Sebastian de la Gomera found a massive 7-meter (21-foot 9-inch) nest in an abandoned house. The town is located in Tenerife, the largest of the seven Canary Islands. The police boarded off the home. The police investigated the home after neighbors voiced concerns. Local wasps do not build nest of this size, so it is believed the wasps must be an invasive African species. There are thought to be millions of wasps inside the huge nest.

The Daily Mail says the Tenerife wasp nest could top the previous biggest wasp nest every found. A wasp nest over 3.7 meters (12 feet) long was found in Waimaukau in New Zealand in 1963.
