New Image of Ghostly Green Planetary Nebula Released

Posted on April 29, 2013

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) recently released this image and video of the glowing green planetary nebula IC 1295. The nebula is located 3300 light-years away in the constellation of Scutum.

This is the most detailed image of the nebula ever released. The image was captured by the ESO's Very Large Telescope. The multiple shells or bubbles surrounded IC 1295 are gas that was expelled by unstable fusion reactions in the star's core. The ESO says these reactions are like "huge thermonuclear belches."
