Scientists Discover Previously Unknown Ammonite

Researchers at the Natural History Museum in Vienna discovered a previously unknown ammonite. The strange looking creature had a long body with spikes and an octopus-like face with short tentacles. The fossil of Dissimilites intermedius was discovered on the Dolomite mountains in the Alps, which was the bottom of the ocean 128 million years ago. The scientists, led by Alexander Lukeneder, used 3D scanning technology to unearth the fossil one layer a a time.
The scientists also created an animation of the creature swimming in what would have been the Tethyan Ocean. You can see a 3D animation of the ancient cephalopod here on the top right side of the page.
