World Health Organization Says Ebola Outbreak in Congo Not Under Control

Posted on September 13, 2012

Reuters reports that the World Health Organization is warning that an ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is not under control. WHO is also warning the outbreak could spread to major towns if it is not brought under control.

31 people have died from the disease. The death toll has doubled since last week. The number of infected people was not given. The last major outbreak in DR Congo was in 2007 when an Ebola-Zaire outbreak killed 187 people. The fatality rate during that outbreak was 71%. A table of prior outbreaks can be found here.

The Congo outbreak is reportedly not related to the outbreak in Uganda last month.
